Active Shooter Prevention & Response for Long-Term Care Training

Through an OSHA Susan Harwood Targeted Topics Training Grant, the LeadingAge Kansas Foundation developed an interactive application-focused training to help organizations and individual employees with pre-event, during event, and post-event strategies for active shooter situations.  The training focused heavily on prevention but also taught Run, Hide, Fight techniques in the context of senior care and post-incident response from the individual employee and organizational levels.  The role of policy, effective communication and a workplace safety culture was explored. This training sessions began in March of 2024 and will run through August 2024.

Long-Term Care Resident to Staff Aggression: Prevention and Response Training 

Through an OSHA Susan Harwood Targeted Topics Training Grant, the LeadingAge Kansas Foundation developed an interactive application-focused training to help caregivers learn the tools and strategies necessary to prevent and respond to resident aggression.  The training focused heavily on prevention but also taught techniques for de-escalation as well as during and post-incident response from the individual employee and organizational levels.  The role of policy, effective communication and a workplace safety culture was explored. This training ran from March through December of 2022.

Covid-19 Safety for CNAs Training Series  

Through an OSHA Susan Harwood Targeted Topics Training Grant, the LeadingAge Kansas Foundation developed the COVID-19 Safety for CNAs training series.  It was a five-week, live virtual training series with an interactive 90-minute training each week.  It was designed to equip (and refresh) CNAs with the knowledge needed to be safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, help them develop skills to properly protect themselves (and others), and help them gain confidence in their ability to recognize safety concerns and advocate for safety during the pandemic. Training content sought to develop a strong understanding of the role their individual actions play in their safety and the safety of others in the organization.  The training included topics that aligned with COVID-19 survey training topics and OSHA required education topics including hand hygiene, PPE selection and use, infection control precautions, etc.

  • Training 4:  Rights, Responsibilities and Communication  

  • Training 5:  Putting it all Together – a fully interactive review and application focused training  

 During the grant year over 280 long-term care workers completed the full training series.

TeamSTEPPS® Teamwork and Communication Skills for Antipsychotic Reduction 

Through a two-year grant from the Kansas Department on Aging and Disability Services, LeadingAge Kansas Foundation partnered with the Washburn University School of Nursing to teach long-term care workers TeamSTEPPS® to help with antipsychotic reduction.  TeamSTEPPS® is a research based proven program to enhance performance and resident safety using clear, consistent communication, teamwork and leadership tools and strategies.  The program was developed by AHRQ and has proven effective across healthcare settings.   

The project included regional trainings open to teams and individuals from Kansas long-term care organizations and on-site training and implementation support for targeted organizations.  During the grant, 154 Kansas long-term care workers were trained as TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainers, and those individuals reached an additional 1,695 long-term care workers.
